What are “Free Bets” really?
Online betting sites offer free or “bonus” bets to new customers as a way of enticing them to sign up to their website. On their homepages or on their advertising they have big, flash, bold headlines that say things such as the “$250 free bet” offered by Sportsbet or “$250 bonus bet” that Centrebet offer. People rush in and sign up before reading the fine print and then realise the truth of free bets.
The most common is the match bet. That is when you sign up, in the instance of the previous examples, your first $250 worth of bets are matched dollar for dollar by the agency giving you a 200% return on your first bets. This isn’t always as cut and dry because in some cases it is only your first bet to the value of $250 or less, so you would need to put down a big bet to get all the value out of it.
Other examples of bonus bets are TAB Sportsbet’s gimmick bets. On certain football games they will offer a return on all bets in certain situations. An example would be returning all first try scorer bets in a Rugby League game if Ben Barba scores the first try or if Lance Franklin kicks more than four goals in an AFL game all first goalscorer bets are returned. Things like that.
Don’t assume that free bets are all smoke and mirrors and let it stop you from taking advantage of them. If you are going to put some bets on online anyway you might as well get a bonus out of it. The “all bets are returned if” bets are also a tremendous thing to take advantage of. What could be better in betting than having an entirely free bet? If you win, you get huge dollars, if you lose you get your money back? Fantastic.
